Survey Says!

Published by d under What I'm Doin'

A list apart released their 2007 Web Design Survey last week where they compiled results from 33,000 web professionals. I don’t expect my audience to quickly click to read it so I will consolidate my take on it.

The industry is dominated by white, males, between the ages of 25-32, with an average income of $40k - $60k. [14%: $60k-$80k, 6.8%: $80k-$90k, 2.9%: $100-$120, 1.3% $150k+]

My favorite response: Job satisfaction by job title: Project Manager was the highest 51.6 % along with, Job satisfaction by organization type: web agency. So over 51% of us, Project Managers (12% responded other?)  working for web agencies are satisfied with our profession. But apparently we also work the most amount of hours and earn the average salary.

In case I am wrong and you do want to see the results for yourself you can check it out here: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/2007surveyresults

Deja Vu

Published by d under What I'm Doin'

Deja Vu gets 4 out of 5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie from Ron Scott, staring Denzel Washington and Val Kilmer. (btw, is Denzel the “urban” form of Dennis?). Anyway, I really enjoyed watching this movie to for two reasons:

1. I had no idea what it was about, which makes a good movie so much better when you don’t know the storyline before it begins. It’s very hard to approach a movie this way since most trailers give it all away in 30 seconds. Sometimes the title is enough to give it away.

2. The story was completely original, at least to me. I don’t watch a whole lot of fantasy/Sci Fi programming so it may have been done before.

In case you have no idea what to expect now: it’s a drama, peppered with some action and involves something beyond your everyday comprehension. I enjoyed the fast pace sequencing and there was very little that made me ask “how”? I suggest you don’t read anymore about the story and place this at the top of your Netflix queue today.

Think iPhone screen, but bigger!

Published by d under What I'm Doin'

Check out this video from a few weeks back when we (jloop) took a train ride to downtown L.A. for the Wired Nextfest Convention.

This 16ft. Multi-Touch screen is even more amazing in person. But were blown away after Jeff Hahn locates our jloop flickr account and starts animating us. I started dancing, that is after Jeff cropped me out and started controlling my pixeled body like a puppet master. The video demonstrates this with fellow jloopers Mike and Mario pictures. Here’s more about the screen and another video demonstration from the company, Perceptive Pixel.

Please trade Kobe

Published by d under What I'm Doin'

It looks like this rumor wont die. This time it’s coming from the doc, Dr. Jerry Buss, who was quoted recently acknowledging he was open to a deal to trade Kobe Bryant. read here. Sounds like a deal wouldn’t go through until around February though.

I plead, PLEASE trade Kobe. Get some new talent for him. I would love to see the sour remains of the dynasty I enjoyed cheering for so much just a few years back now go away. Let’s wash our hands in Lakerville and start cooking something fresh from scratch.

Oh yeah, plus if Kobe leaves the Lakers before he wins another championship w/o Big Daddy Shaq, I will win a bet with Greg where he has to place a bumper sticker of my choice on his ride for 1 year which will read ‘Dennis Hates Kobe Bryant‘.

HAPPY FRIDAY

Published by admin under What I'm Doin'

NO comment on the Angels depressing end to the post season playoffs! Yahoo stock closed at $28.48 for the end of the week: earnings = $547.60 to date. I updated the header of my blog today (as you can see).

We launched another JLOOP website today for Conduit Development, a local contractor focused on eco-friendly construction. We started this project over a year ago and went through the typical delays; 1. client changes direction of business 2. client delays delivering content 3. jloop struggles to squeeze production into schedule.

Lately I’ve really been feeling like a dad, and it’s cool! As Ashlyn gets bigger and begins to speak her mind (and oh she doesn’t hold back) it is really fascinating to try and hold conversations with her. It trips me out how much she has grown in the last year, or six months for that matter. I am amazed at little things she does by herself now like feed herself. I find myself just wanting to plan my day around doing activities with her that will bring her joy, expose her to a new experiences, and hopefully excercise her membrane a bit to give her a head start in life.

The Office

Published by admin under What I'm Doin'

Over the weekend I applied for a job with Dundler Mifflin Infinite. I am waiting to hear word back from the Long Beach Regional Manager. You know the company that sells paper, for the paperless world.

Speaking of the office, here is a link to one of my favorite office commercials: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hKWM5Z1zds

The Apple Phone Show

Published by admin under What I'm Doin'

If by chance you are wondering why I would add a link to The Apple Phone Show website, this enters me into a contest to win a new iPhone. And since I already have mine and don’t need two, if I wont I would give it away as a loving gift. Anyway, these guys produce a weekly podcast about the latest news, software and tricks about the iPhone. And believe me, there’s plenty to talk about. Really, if you don’t keep up on the newest features and software as it drops, you might as well have a regular old cell phone instead. There isn’t much you can’t do with an iPhone, ask my wife Nicole because I’m always bragging about how much it does.

I got a chance to test out my bro-in-laws iPod touch last weekend too. The safari browser works just like the iPhone as long as its connected to a Wi-Fi signal.

I love Yahoo!

Published by d under What I'm Doin'

I registered my Yahoo account (I think) back in 1998 and have always suggested to friends and family to subscribe and maintain a free account with one of the major email offerers: back then it was Yahoo, hotmail or MSN. I learned this after using work accounts, AOL accounts, school accounts, etc. only to find I would eventually leave AOL, quit my job and move from which ever school I was at, at that time and would lose my identity and anything I had stored there. Since then hotmail absorbed MSN (really vice versa, but hotmail is the domain used for MSN email accounts) and AOL now offers free accounts. Google has come along and done a fine job and actually raised the bar forcing the competition to offer more disk storage and other great mail tools. I have a gmail account and use many Google products. And even though my gmail account appears free of spam (probably only because I haven’t used it to foolishly sign up on crap mailing lists) I don’t see myself abandoning my Yahoo account anytime soon. It’s never let me down and I have established my residence and am pleasantly surprised to find people who email at this account in between years of contact, or lack there of. So I still suggest to friends and family: get a free account from Yahoo and forward any other email account messages to that to avoid losing your alias, or worse, important stored messages.

Yesterday Yahoo announced their new search tool Search Assistant which automatically generates a list of search words and phrases as you type in your search. My wife Nicole pointed this feature out in it’s Beta phase, but it was officially released and announced yesterday. Not only does it save on key strokes as it quickly identifies user intent (new industry keyword) but also provides a handy list of alternative search phrase options you may not have originally thought to enter. It’s much more than the Google and MSN search features which is limited to a list of your own previous searches.

Yahoo Search Assistant

So why the low stock price? I am not one of the fortunates who are affluent enough with spare funds to play the market, but ever since I received my iPhone which contains Yahoo’s up-to-date stock information by default, I cant help but to track it. I was amazed to find the stock at the ridiculous low price of under $23 a share in September and closed out today at just over $27 while Google stock is over $580 a share. I wish I had 10k to experiment with and would invest it all in Yahoo. So that’s my mark, starting today (wish I started a month ago when it was even lower) I will track how my 10k ‘would have done’ had I invested in the market today. I predict I would make a killing. We’ll see. Next I will have to figure out how to track stock earnings. If my rudimentary math is accurate: I would be able to purchase about 370 shares at this price. And (again if I am calculating this correctly) if the stock goes up to $50/share I will have earned 8k / $75/share = 17k / $100/share = 27k / Google size growth: $580/share = $204,oo0k. I just placed this in my Yahoo portfolio and will track this and update where it’s at here on my blizog.
